Mood Disorders

Mood Disorders
Mood is often understood as a general emotional state or baseline that influences how we think, feel, and behave over time. We might describe someone as being in a “good” or “bad” mood, or refer to a person whose emotions shift quickly as “moody.” Clinically, however, mood refers to the sustained emotional tone of an individual’s internal experience and how it shapes their engagement with the external world.
For individuals with Mood Disorders, this emotional baseline becomes significantly disrupted. They may experience prolonged periods of intense sadness, irritability, anger, or elevated mood, or may oscillate between emotional states in ways that interfere with daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life. When left untreated, Mood Disorders can increase the risk of significant impairment, medical complications, and mortality.
Mood Disorders are thought to arise from a combination of biological, genetic, and environmental factors. They are relatively common in adults, with Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder among the most prevalent. In the United States, approximately 7% of adults experience depression in a given year, while about 2.8% are affected by bipolar disorder.
