Every September, the US recognizes the power and availability of treatment of substance use and mental health issues through National Recovery Month. September is therefore also a wonderful time to raise awareness and understanding surrounding addiction and mental health treatment. This month-long homage to the journey of recovery has taken place for over three decades, and it’s something worth celebrating. Our team of nurturing healthcare professionals at True Life is excited to join the celebration now by offering some fun ways to commemorate the month.
Join the Voices for Recovery
The theme for this year’s National Recovery Month is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Celebrating Connections.” 2020 has proven difficult for many people, creating challenges that no one could have anticipated. Maintaining or working towards sobriety or mental balance in such a climate can be quite the undertaking, but joining with the voices of others around you can help you feel connected, seen, and supported. Check out the National Recovery Month official website to find webinars, podcasts, art shows, poetry slams, and other events that amplify the voices of transformation and compassion.
Support Service Providers
Chances are, you’re not too many degrees removed from a dedicated service provider who offers meaningful care and treatment to those struggling with mental health and substance use. Take the time during this National Recovery Month to recognize the service one of these kind souls provides to you or your community. It can be a simple token of gratitude, a thank you, a flower, a note, a banner, balloons, or even a full-fledged barbecue and soiree. Whatever feels right. Let’s champion the front line mental health workers who have our backs.
Share Your Story
When you’re in the midst of deep depression or having unsettling anxiety, when you’re eliminating alcohol from your life or tossing that last pack of cigarettes, it’s easy to feel alone. But reading or hearing about someone else’s journey out of a dark mental place can be inspiring. Help empower others by sharing your own story. Sometimes, exposing the truth of our wounds is the surest way to heal them.
Launch a Campaign
Is there an issue you feel passionately about? Do you have a strong desire to rally support around PTSD or prescription drug addiction recovery? This National Recovery Month is a fantastic time to launch a fundraising or awareness campaign (or both) for a cause that feels important. Grass-roots efforts are wonderful ways to bring communities together and create bonds and avenues of support that will continue to assist people long after the campaign is complete.
Celebrate Yourself
Maybe that means throwing yourself a party overflowing with all the delightful activities, people, foods, and beverages that nourish and sustain you. Maybe it means taking a long solo hike along a beautiful cliffside overlooking the ocean. Or, maybe it means creating a beautiful work of art that brings your inner joy to life. Or maybe that means making that first phone call to seek help as you take the initial steps on your own road to recovery. However you want to celebrate yourself and your journey towards sustainable balance, well-being, and fulfillment, use this National Recovery Month as inspiration.
Find the Help You Need
Every state offers numerous services to help people who are struggling with a wide range of mental health and substance challenges. Through community clinics, treatment centers, and more, anyone seeking to change his or her relationship with mental health and substance use can find a guiding hand. National Recovery Month is a wonderful opportunity to pause and take stock of where you are on your own path to healing and assess what options may be available to you.
